This site is way out in the middle of nowhere. The gravel road off the highway is pretty well maintained. The site itself is fairly new, established in 2000 and a bit primitve. There is not too much to the visitor center but it does have a small bookstore and is air-conditioned. The trail to the overlook is off to the west a bit but is accessible by car. There are a few plaques along the way for historical reference but if the park service guide, Eric is available, he is the best source of info. A real breath of fresh air and tremendously interesting. We enjoyed our visit but can’t wait until it is further developed. Check visiting hours before you go. We got there by 3:30 p.m. and it closes at 4:00.

History comes alive when you visit the spot where something momentous happened. In this case something of such unbelievable horror, that you can still feel the pain 160 years later. The guides are amazingly knowledgeable and respectful. The fact that the rather inadequate memorial headstone here still refers to the Sand Creek Battleground, the local town is still called Chivington and that the Memorial outside Colorado’s Capital Building still references Sand Creek in a list of Battle Honors is beyond me.

Been to Fort Robinson, Neb. And to Little Bighorn Battle site in the last year. I left with my heart heavy with what had happened there. It was extremely eye-opening and was very spiritual . My last stops were to Pine Ridge Res. And from there I went to the the Wounded Knee Historical site. In all the places my wife and I visited, here was where we experienced the most powerful understanding of the suffering Native American had gone through . We ended our trip by visiting the Crazy Horse Memorial . There it came to a full circle for us.. Hoping to go back soon. We very much want to visit Sand Creek Massacre on our way to South Dakota. Just a little note about our trip…..Red Tail Hawks were always visible on our trip. This was a very good spiritual sign . Made it home safely and greatful!

More Eads Colorado History

Eads was once an economic and social center for Kiowa County’s ranching and farming community. However, like many small communities in Colorado’s Eastern Plains region, Eads has experienced economic and population decline. Many of the buildings on its main street fell into disuse and became uninhabitable. The community recognizes the importance of a vibrant downtown and has worked tirelessly to revitalize it, with a focus on its historic commercial center.

The Town of Eads, Kiowa County, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Colorado Department of Local Affairs, Colorado Department of Local Affairs, Colorado Preservation, Inc., local senior citizens, a theater group, as well as the Governor’s Energy Office are all working together to accomplish this. The community has now completed the acquisition and rehabilitation of Bransgrove Building*. It is now focusing on projects such as the Murdock Building (the Slater Whitelaw and Schoggen combination), the Crow Luther Cultural Events Center and the American Legion Hall. This goal is to adaptively reuse some of the few historic buildings remaining in the community. A cultural arts center, senior center and theater will serve the community’s greater needs. The center also includes a visitor center for Sand Creek Massacre Site, which is nationally significant.

The community, with the support of its partners, supports these projects through various fundraising activities in the hope of conserving the historic downtown and creating an opportunity to bring new social activity to Eads.
